Death Claims Pioneer Valley Springs Woman
Mrs. Mathilda Sophia Anderson,
90, Living in County
68 Years
Valley Springs lost one of its early pioneers, the last surviving charter member of the Beaver Valley Lutheran Church, early Sunday mornings when Mrs. Mathilda Sophia Anderson, 90, died at her farm home four miles southwest of Valley Springs.
She had lived in Minnehaha County for 68 years and had been in failing health about three months when death came.
Funeral services will be at 2 o’clock Wednesday afternoon in the Beaver Valley church, two miles from the Anderson farm home, with Rev. R.W. Jonson, pastor of the Augustana Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, officiating. Burial will be in the church yard cemetery.
Mrs. Anderson was born November 18, 1848 in Sweden but came to the United States when 18 years old and settled in Rockford, Ill. Two years later, in 1868 she moved to Sioux City and remained there until 1870 when she came to Minnehaha County, her home since that time.
She was married to Frank Anderson in 1872 but he died in 1895 and in 1910 she was married to August Anderson. Her second husband preceded Mrs. Anderson in Death in 1919.
She leaves three daughter, Mrs. M.P. Halverson, Sioux Falls; Mrs. Harry Gies, Mankota, Minn., and Ms. Susie Anderson at home, and six sons, John, East Sioux Falls; Adolph, Valley Springs, and Carl, Otto, Edward and Fred, all at home. In addition there are eight grandchildren.
The husbands, one daughter, Mrs. Ed Engebretson and several brothers and sister who lived in Sweden preceded Mrs. Anderson in Death.
The Miller Funeral Home is in charge of funeral arrangements.
