Philomena Broghammer was born on April 10, 1903 in Festina, Iowa, the daughter of George and Clara (Schissel) Broghammer. As an infant, she moved with her family to a farm four miles north of Dell Rapids. She grew up on the family farm and attended St. Mary Academy. Philomena helped her mother on the farm until she married Fred Munk on September 17, 1924 in Sioux Falls. They made their home in Dell Rapids for three years and then farmed near Dell Rapids until 1948. After moving back into Dell Rapids, Philomena worked at the Dells Bakery for thirteen years and then in the St. Mary hot lunch program for two years. Fred died in 1968. Philomena moved to Friendship Village in 1979 and became a resident of the Dell Rapids Area Nursing Home in 1999.
Philomena died on Wednesday, January 23, 2002 at the Dell Rapids Area Nursing Home. She was 98 and was preceded in death by four brothers, three sisters, one grandson and one great-grandson.
She was a member of the St. Mary Catholic Church and Altar Society, the American Legion Auxiliary, and Court Sancta Maria #368 of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas.
Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Melvin and his wife, Irene of Dell Rapids; her two daughters, Mary Jean Nielsen and Her husband, Leroy of Dell Rapids and Janet Franzen and her husband, Francis of Ossian, Iowa; and her nine grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandsons.
