Grace was born April 4, 1919 near Beaver Creek, Minnesota to parents Harvey and Victoria (Rollag) Bly. She grew up in the Garretson area, attended country school and graduated from Garretson High School. She then attended Augustana College and received her teacher degree. She taught at the Hilmoe Country School near Baltic.
Grace married Royal “Hoot” Berg June 7, 1940 at Splitrock Lutheran Church near Brandon. They lived and farmed west of Baltic until moving into Balti in 1974. Royal died Aug 27, 2002.
Grace was the editor of the Baltic Beacon from 1959 until 1974, for which she received many awards from the South Dakota Newspaper Association.
Grace was an active member of the Willow Creek Lutheran Church, ladies aid and taught Sunday school for many years. She also served on the Stat ALCW board.
Grace died Tuesday, November 11, 2008 at the Dells Area Health Center.
Grateful for having shared her life are her children and their spouses, Shirley and Larry Nelson, Spencer, Iowa; Kenneth and Becky Berg, Louisbug, Kansas; Arlyn and Janice Berg, Edgerton, Kansas; David and Bonnie Berg, Rapid City; Richard and Lori Berg, Baltic, Douglas and Lisa Berg, Gardner, Kansas; twenty one grandchildren; twenty three great grandchildren; a sister, Leonie Hanson, Sioux Falls; two sisters in law, Cas Bly, Garretson; Christine Bly, Sioux Falls; and many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and three brothers, John, Loren and Brunell.
