Longtime Dells businessman dies at 79

George M. Jorgensen closed the career of a long time businessman of Dell Rapids Oct 24. Jorgensen was born in the Village of North Farup, Ribe Township, Denmark, May 14, 1896, and was baptized in the Farup Lutheran faith, the state church of Denmark. Orphaned at ten years of age, he began working for his lodging and meals. At 17 he borrowed enough money to immigrate to America on the famous ship Mauretania, and arrived in Dell Rapids in April 1913. He worked for area farmers and attended a rural school to learn to speak English. He was befriended by the Martin Anderson family and made his home with them until he left for military service in World War I in 1918.

He became a citizen of the United States in 1919 and began farming eight miles northwest of Dell Rapids. His marriage to Juanita Harrington occurred Jan 6, 1923 in Sioux Falls. One child was born to this union. Deane Lee.

In January 1929 he purchased the new feed and seed store built by Bert Sanders in Dell Rapids and continued in Business until 1959 when he retired to begin an extensive travel program with his wife.

Jorgensen was a past Commander and a 55 year member of the George A. Fitzgerald Post No. 65 of the American Legion and a Master Mason in Lodge No 40 AD&AM.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers. In addition to his widow Juanita and son Deane of Mission, Kan., he leaves two grandchildren and a sister Mrs. Lena Lank, Davenport, IA.
