Jason William Nelson
May 29, 1979 - May 7, 2020
Jason Nelson, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, peacefully passed away at home with his mother and his sister by his side on Thursday, May 7, 2020, after a long battle of cancer. Jason was 40.
Jason William Nelson was born on May 29, 1979 to Mark and Margaret (Homan) Nelson in Rapid City, South Dakota. Jason was raised in Sioux Falls and attended Sioux Falls Public Schools. He later received his GED.
As a boy, Jason played soccer and basketball in school. Jason had a passion for dogs. Since he was about 14 years old, Jason spent most of his time helping training dogs. He adored his dog, Dutchess. Jason also enjoyed hunting and holds many special hunting memories with his uncles and cousins.
Jason loved football and was an avid Cowboys fan. He played pool with his friends for years. Jason was a good card player, especially at poker. He enjoyed spending time with friends and family. Jason also loved the holidays. He kept a Christmas tree lit all year long.
Jason was a kind, caring, loving, compassionate and forgiving person. He wore his heart on his sleeve. He loved life and people, and even when he was not feeling well, maintained a steady smile on his face and a hearty welcome to those coming to visit. Jason will greatly be missed.
Grateful for having shared his life are his loving mother, Margaret Nelson; sister, Heather Twedt; niece, Sariah Nelson; nephew, Ethan Twedt; aunts, Mary Kay (Tom) Reeve, Pat Hetterscheidt, Deb (Bruce) Nelson and Cathy (Bruce) Bohms; uncles, Frank (Carla) Homan and John (Lori) Homan; and many other relatives and dear friends.
Jason is preceded in death by his grandparents, Francis and Mary Homan.
A private Memorial Service will be live-streamed on Thursday, May 14, 2020 at 2:00 pm and inurnment will take place at St. Michael Cemetery.
