Gudrun
Gudrun O'Lea Gran Nelson was born at Enebakk, Norway, on April 10, 1910 to Thea and Peter Gran. She came to this country in 1914 with her parents and two sisters, Swanhild and Esther and one brother, Paul, to Baltic, SD. One brother, Kore, and one sister, Theresa, were born in Baltic, SD. Her mother passed away in 1917. She then went to live with Martha Questad, her foster mother. Here she had a foster brother, Wilmer, and two foster sisters, Annie and Emma.
Gudrun was baptized in the Enebakk Church in Norway and was confirmed in the Willow Creek Church, Baltic, SD. She attended school in the Baltic area.
Gudrun was united in marriage to Emory K. Nelson on September 20, 1933. They farmed in the Baltic, SD, area, where three children were born to them. They are Richard, Dellene, and Douglas. In 1946 the family moved to a farm near Sherman, SD. She was a seamstress, artist, and loved music. In 1972 Gudrun and Emory retired and moved into Dell Rapids, SD. She worked at the Odd Fellows Home as a cook for nine years. She retired in 1982. In her 90's she loved to write poetry.
Her husband, Emory, passed away on April 24, 1996. Upon his death she moved to Garretson, SD. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church at Sherman, SD and belonged to the Esther Circle of the Ladies Aide, and she enjoyed her quilting days at the church. In August 1999 she moved back to Dell Rapids. Gudrun passed away on Wednesday, March 7, 2007 at Terrace Manor Nursing Home in Dell Rapids. She was 96.
Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Dellene (Rodney) Dubbelde, Sherman, SD, and her two sons, Richard, Sioux Falls, and Douglas (Connie), White, SD; Her nine grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, and three great, great grandchildren.
Preceding her in death: Her husband, Emory, and her parents: Thea and Peter Gran. Three sisters: Esther (Melvin) Keith, Theresa (Theodore) Udahl, and Swanhild (Lorenz) Mellom. Two Brothers: Kore and Paul (Lucy) Gran. Her foster mother: Martha (Ola) Questad. Two foster sisters, Annie (John) Hilmoe and Emma (Seymour) Berven; and one foster brother, Wilmer (Stella) Questad.
Her funeral service will be on Monday, March 12, 2007 at the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids. Interment will be in the Stordahl Cemetery, rural Dell Rapids. Visitation at Kahler Funeral Home.
