Donell was born on the family farm near Hartford to parents Wilhelm and Bessie Nelson. He grew up near Hartford, attended country school and graduated from Hartford High School. He served in the United States Army during World War II and farmed in the Hartford area following his discharge.
On August 14, 1949, Donell married Betty Moe in Sioux Falls. They lived in Sioux Falls and moved to Hartford in 1952. He worked in construction and was an electrician for 30 years.
Donell was a member of Christ Lutheran Church and the Hartford American Legion.
Donell died Thursday, February 22, 1990, at Royal C. Johnson Veteran Hospital in Sioux Falls.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Betty, Hartford; three sons; Jeff and wife Bev, Dell Rapids; John and wife Bev, Salt Lake City, Utah; and James, Hartford; a daughter, Judy Nelson, Dell Rapids; three grandchildren; and two brothers; Vernon, Sioux Falls, and Russell, Hartford.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, Scott, and two brothers.
