Jens
Birth: Jun. 8, 1842
Death: Oct. 1, 1894
Jens E. Johnson, of Logan Township, met with a very sudden death Tuesday forenoon. While on his way to Dell Rapids with a team and buggy he fell out of the buggy near the corner of the Griswold farm, about a half mile south-east of town, and was dead when found. The team followed the road to Gunder Olson’s place near the bride where they were caught. John Kilness’ son, who was coming to town, saw Mr. Johnson lying at the side of the road. He notified Gunder Olson and Henry Wilson, who went to the scene of the accident. They found Mr. Johnson lying on his face as he had probably fallen, and life seemed to be extinct. They brought the body to town, taking it to Dr. Parker’s office, but all efforts at resuscitation were in vain, and it was later taken to the Undertaker Medin. Coroner Booth, of Sioux Falls was notified and he came up on the afternoon train, accompanied by Dr. R.R. Stevenson, and held an inquest. Messrs. W.G. Lund, A.R. Sullivan and R. Keating were empaneled at a jury and E.E. Griswold acted as clerk. After hearing the evident the jury returned a verdict of the effect “that the aid Jens E. Johnson came to his death by falling from his buggy during an attack of epilepsy while on his way from his home to Dell Rapids on the 2nd day of October, 1894 at about 10 o’clock a.m.” Mr. Johnson had been subject to epileptic fits for about eighteen years. The deceased was about 55 years old. He was an old resident of this vicinity, having come here about 22 years ago, and was a thrifty, well-to-do farmer. His wife died about three years ago. He leaves a family of seven children. The funeral was held yester afternoon, Rev. Chr. C Moe conducting the services at the Norway Lutheran Church in Edison Township.
