Native of Sweden Came to South Dakota in 1888, Living Near Gettysburg - Funeral Services to Be Held Wednesday Afternoon
Mrs. Hannah Thelin Johnson, 72, a resident of South Dakota for nearly 50 years, died Sunday at a local hospital after a long Illness.
Funeral services for the pioneer woman will be held at 1:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the Miller Funeral chapel and at 3 o'clock at the Benton Lutheran church, west of Crooks, S. D., with Rev. R. W. Jonson, pastor of the Augustana Lutheran church, officiating at both services. Interment will be made in the Benton church cemetery.
Born in Tornersjo, Halland, Sweden, on September 27, 1865, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Anderson, she was confirmed in 1882 and joined the Lutheran church just before leaving for America with her parents in 1888.
They came directly to Gettysburg, S. D., arriving June 29, 1888. Mrs Johnson came to Sioux Falls in 1889 and worked here as a housemaid for the C. O. Natasta and C. E. McKinley families until her marriage to Ben K. Thelin of Gettysburg on March 21, 1893. They lived on a farm in Potter county until the death of Mr. Thelin April 15, 1905. With her five children she came to Sioux Falls again in December, 1905 to live with her mother and brother, Karl.
On March 22, 1909 she married Ernest R. Johnson and they moved to a farm northwest of Ellis, in Wavne township Mr. Johnson died October 3. 1934. In April, 1937. Mrs. Johnson moved to Sioux Falls. She was a member of the Augustana Lutheran church of this city.
The survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Paul Ostrom, Great Falls, Mont., and Mrs. Emil Ericksen, Sioux Falls, and three sons, Guy A. Thelin, Foochow, China; E. Milo Thelin, Ft. Worth. Tex., and A. L. Thelin. --Sioux Falls; two brothers, Ed Anderson, Ripon, Calif., and Karl Anderson, Sioux Falls, , ana nine grandchildren. Besides her two husbands, two daughters preceded her in death.
