Stanley Emerson Schmidt
October 9, 1936 - July 27, 2024
Stanley Emerson Schmidt age 87, passed away Saturday, July 27, 2024. Having survived many health battles since 2007, it was Vascular Dementia that eventually called him home.
A celebration of Stan’s life will be 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 17, 2024 at First Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, SD. His family will be present to greet friends on Friday, August 16, 2024 at George Boom Funeral Home & On-Site Crematory in Sioux Falls from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to The Audubon Society.
Stan was born on October 9, 1936 to Alwin and Winifred Schmidt in Sacramento, CA. With their love and guidance, he found a love of baseball, God, and music.
Another of Stan’s passions was meteorology, which he studied at Sacramento Community College. Afterward, he joined the California Air National Guard in Communications. The time came to continue his education and his interests changed. His mother encouraged him to “Go east young man”, so he packed his bags, hopped on the train and headed to the Midwest to begin his study at Westmar College in LeMars, IA. He continued his Guard commitment in the Sioux City Air Guard and had a job with KLEM radio.
While at Westmar College, his study of music took him to the stage where he met the love of his life, Norma Marie Kammann. They sang the leading roles of the Count and Countess in The Marriage of Figaro and married each other August 2, 1960. They taught in Iowa, and traveled to Oregon where their beautiful daughter, Camille was born. Then returned to IA where Amy entered the world in Sibley.
In 1969 the family moved to Omaha, NE. During the 40 years in Omaha, Stan taught vocal music at Bryan High School, directed the choirs at Kountze Memorial and Augustana Lutheran Churches, announced radio breaks for KETV, hosted a radio show at KESY, was a member of The Voices of Mel Olsen, directed the Clarion Chorale, was the national distributor for composer, John Rutter and the Cambridge Singers on Colleguim Records, and shared 24 years of choral music on his KVNO show, "Going Beyond Words".
Two of Stan’s favorite activities blended perfectly when he began singing the National Anthem for the Omaha Royals. This led to his contracting of singers for the College World Series each year. A story Stan is very proud to share.
In 2007, Stan was forced to slow down when he had five-way bi-pass surgery. He and Norma decided to move to Sioux Falls to be closer to family. Stan was very happy to have two grandsons to take to the ballgame, watch their marching band competitions, see them graduate and marry, and finally meet his great grandson. His sense of humor and love of life will carry on in all of us. Rest in peace.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Norma Schmidt; two daughters, Camille DeVore and Amy (Eric) Knutson; two grandsons, Christopher (Sophal) Knutson and Daniel (Heather) Knutson; one great grandson, Callen Knutson; brother-in-law, Ron Saylor; Sacramento, CA; two nephews, Todd (Robyn) Saylor, Chico, CA and Tim (Jamie) Saylor, San Diego, CA; many other relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Alwin and Winifred Schmidt; and one sister, Carol Dee Saylor.
