Verlyn C. Schmidt, (91) of Sioux Falls, passed away on Friday, July 9, 2021.
A memorial service will be held 2:00 pm on Sunday, July 18, 2021 at First Congregational Church, 300 S Minnesota Ave, Sioux Falls, SD 57104 with reception to follow.
Verlyn was born on June 4, 1930 in Tripp, South Dakota to Chris and Edna (Hofer) Schmidt. He attended Tripp High School and later graduated from Yankton College. Shortly after college, he enlisted in the Air Force during the Korean War, spending 2 years in Denver and 2 years in Germany. Soon after his honorable discharge, Governor Joe Foss appointed him to be a South Dakota State Bank Examiner.
Verlyn married Elaine Reiser in July of 1958. That union produced three sons. Elaine died from cancer in October, 1976 at the age of 46.
In November of 1959 he resigned his position as a Bank Examiner and moved from Watertown to Sioux Falls to help start a new bank named Western Bank.
Verlyn married Sherri Brehm in October, 1980. Her daughter Christen was 12 years old.
He worked 36 years at Western Bank and retired when the bank was sold. Six months later, Verlyn began working part-time at First Premier Bank for the next 11 years.
In June 2007, Verlyn received an award from the SD Bankers Association honoring his contributions, and 50 years in the banking business.
He enjoyed serving his community and church. Over the years, Verlyn spent time and energy on various boards, including The Sioux Empire United Way, the Sioux Falls Development Foundation, the SD Children’s Home Society, the SD Bankers Association, the Sioux Falls Board of Health, Sioux Falls Junior Achievement, Yankton College Board of Trustees, American Institute of Banking, First Congregational Church Board of Trustees, and Dow Rummel Village Board of Trustees. He was a member and past President of the Kiwanis Club of Sioux Falls. He was also a long-standing member of Minnehaha Country Club where many rounds of golf and hands of pitch were played.
Verlyn loved spending time with his family. He also enjoyed hunting, golfing, and making people laugh. His jokes and storytelling were legendary.
Verlyn is survived by his wife Sherri; sons, Mike (Dasa) and Steve (Deb); stepdaughter, Christen (Jeff); 8 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren; and brothers; Myron and Jerome. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Elaine; and his son Mark.
