Melvin "Pepperoni" Schmidt, 79, of Dell Rapids passed away on Sunday, March 6, 2011 at the Dells Area Health Center. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, March 10, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. in St. Mary Catholic Church, Dell Rapids. Interment, with military rites, will be in the St. Mary Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon on Wednesday at Kahler Funeral Home and a Christian Wake Service will begin at 6:00 p.m.

Melvin was born on the family farm just outside of Dell Rapids to Frank & Margaret (Klink) Schmidt. He attended and graduated from St. Mary's Catholic School. After graduating he joined the Army and served during the Korean Conflict. He returned home to farm with his dad. On October 6, 1959 he married Lorraine Burggraff in Hartford. They made their home on the family farm and raised their 5 children there. Melvin was proud to have been able to help keep the farm in the family for over 100 years.

Melvin was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and also an active member of the Dell Rapids Legion and Foresters. Melvin & Lorraine were great fans of polka dancing and their yearly vacation was to the annual Polka Days festival in Minnesota. Most days Melvin could be found in his shop working on his favorite toys—John Deere tractors. He favored two cylinder John Deere tractors and was a proud member of the Two Cylinder Club. On a hot summer day you could find him sitting out front with his faithful dog Peggy by his side and a cold Miller in his hand. He enjoyed the simple things in life and was loved by many. There weren't many places he could go without running into an old friend or making a new one.

Left to cherish his memory are his devoted wife of 51 years, Lorraine; children Janet Perteet of Bellevue, NE; Lorri (Greg) Lucas of Kingwood, TX; Raymond (Sherri) Schmidt of Crooks, SD; Vicki (Vince) Meiergerd of West Point, NE and Harvey Schmidt of Dell Rapids; a sister Mary Ann (Ron) Velde of Marshall, MN. He was also a loving Grampy to Martin II, Nicole, Michelle, Nathan, Alex, Mackenize, Tanner, Ben & Alison.
