The Baltic Elevator Fire affected the lives of many, and fatally gripped lives of a few. Fifty year old Dwight Daugaard, who farmed near Garretson and worked at the Dell Rapids Post Office for the past 10 years, and his eldest son Darwin, 20, hauled a load of corn to the Baltic Elevator that Wednesday morning, May 28, when the building exploded, severely burning them both. The Daugaard men were taken to the McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls, by noon, and flown to the Burn Center at Ramsey Hospital and Medical Center in St. Paul, M.N., at 8:30 that night. Dwight died at Ramsey Thursday evening, May 29, at approximately 8:30, leaving his wife of 22 years, Dorothy; one daughter, Debbie; and nine sons, Dwayne, Darwin, Dale, Daryl, Dean, Don, David, Daren, and Dan. His funeral was held on Monday, June 2.
