Joseph "Joe" E. Geraets
(November 21, 1947 - September 7, 2009)

Joseph Edward Geraets was born November 21, 1947 to Clarence and Helen (Bohnenkamp) Geraets. He was the second child of a growing family. His four brothers and nine sisters grew up on a farm west of Dell Rapids. He attended St. Mary Catholic Schools, graduating in 1966.

He enlisted in the Army and served in Germany and then Vietnam. He was honorably discharged in 1969.

In May of 1969, he was united in marriage to Ethel Ginsbach. They were blessed with two daughters and three sons. Joe worked at John Morrell & Co. for many years.

The American Legion was an important facet of Joe's life. He was an active member and past commander of the Dell Rapids George A. Fitzgerald Post. He was a past commander of the Firing Squad. The Legion Conventions were always something he looked forward to every year. Joe was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Dell Rapids and the Catholic Order of Foresters. He served on the Enterprise Township Board for many years. Family and farming were the two most important aspects throughout his life. Joe was a founding member of the T&C's Hot Dog Club.

Joe passed away unexpectedly on September 7, 2009. He was 61 years of age and preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, two brothers-in-law and infant grandson, Will.

He is survived by his five children, Wendy (Scott) Nelson and their children, Emma and Gabriel; Christopher (Shelly) and their children, Ethan and Aiden; Kimberly (Curtis) Muller and their children, Regan and Nathaniel; Matthew (Mistie) and their children, Anthony and Clara; and Adam who currently attends USD (All of the children live in Dell Rapids except for Kimberly, who resides in Tea); his brothers, Jerome (LaVonne) Geraets of Dell Rapids and Jeff (Tammy) Geraets of Renner; his sisters, Jean (special friend, Max) Mines of AZ, Judy (Shawn) Geraets-Parcell of NE; Janet Ordal of NV, Jennifer (Donald) Huwe of Dell Rapids, Joyce (Chuck) Selland of Chamberlain; Joan (Greg) Spangler of KY, June (Randy) Huewe of IA, Julia (Rick) Blue of Vermillion and Jackie (Jeff) Geraets Rauh of NV; his sisters-in-law, Yvette Geraets of Sioux Falls, and Julie Wanner of Dell Rapids.

Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, September 11, 2009 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Dell Rapids. Interment will be in the St. Mary Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon at Thursday, September 10, 2009 at Kahler Funeral Home. The family will be present at 4:30 p.m. The Christian Wake Service will begin at 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home with a Catholic Order of Foresters Rosary to follow.
