South Pacific Battle
Memorial Service Was
Held Monday
Mrs. Rose Geraets received a telegram from the U.S. Navy department on Wednesday, June 30th, stating that her son, James, had been killed in action. No particulars were given as to where and when he was killed.
James enlisted in the navy the first part of September, 1942, and was called into service on September 17th. After six weeks training he went to sea, and ever since has been in active service.
He was born on June 2, 1921, near Dell Rapids. He received his education at St. Mary's Academy.
Funeral services were held for him on Monday morning at St. Mary's church at nine o'clock. The requiem high mass was read by Father Medicus. The American Legion and Auxiliary marched in a body in his honor, also the Catholic Foresters, of which he was a member.
Beside his mother, he leaves seven brothers and five sisters, of which one brother, Clarence, is in the armed forces in North Africa.
Out-of-town relatives who were here for the services were: Mr. and Mrs. Jake Boelns, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Rickerl and daughter, Mrs. Lawrence Howell and son, Lawrence, Casper Rickerl, Henry Boelns and Mrs. Kate Boelns, all of Elkton and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Richerl of Bushnell, S. Dak.
