Dr. Dean Allen Cook
July 31, 1955 - September 7, 2022

Dr. Dean Allen Cook, the son of Chester Ray, Sr. and Geraldine Cleone (Moe) Cook, was born on July 31, 1955, in Algona, Iowa. His childhood was spent in the Algona, Milford, and Hartley areas where he received his early education. After graduating from Waterloo East High School, in Waterloo, Iowa, Dean worked in the Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Aurora, Colorado; and Spencer areas before enrolling in the University of South (USD) where he began studies in PE, special education and general education.

He met his wife, Debora J. (Stassel) Cook while taking classes at USD. They dated for three months before becoming engaged and married on September 17, 1977. They both transferred and graduated with BAs from the University of Northern Iowa with an emphasis in elementary and special education teaching in 1981. They then enrolled in graduate school at USD where Dean earned an MA in Educational Administration and Debora in Special Education Administration (1982). They secured jobs in the educational field and returned to complete an EdD in 1999 with Dean having an emphasis in Educational Administration (Superintendent of Schools) and Debora having an emphasis in Educational Administration (Director of Special Education). They were always side-by-side in all ventures.

Dean taught two years in 6th grade at the Vermillion, SD middle school, was an elementary principal in Clark, SD (2 years) and Hot Springs, SD (5 years). He then became a superintendent of schools in Artesion-Letcher, SD (8 years), Walnut, Iowa (5 years) and Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, Iowa (16 years). He retired at the end of June 2020.

Dean loved the outdoors! He cherished the fishing trips with his son, Scott. Dean loved Saturday football conversations and discussing what the Hawkeyes could do better with Steven, his son. We still don’t have answers to the Hawkeye football problem. His most joyous times were spent with his family, and loved spending time with his grandchildren immensely! The family vacation to the Black Hills provided so many wonderful memories.

During Dean’s career, he aided many students who were struggling academically, emotionally, and financially. He always stepped up to help others less fortunate and who needed a simple hand up. He was always fair and put himself last as a leader.

Dean lived with Stage IV Prostate Cancer a long while, endured many procedures, and still remained positive. He loved boating, fishing, sitting on the deck listening to music, nature and family stories.

Dean transitioned to his next adventure on September 7, 2022. He was preceded in death by his parents and a cherished mother-in-law, Jeannette M. Stassel. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 45 years; his son, Steven (Liz) Cook and grandchildren Liam, Delaney and Jackson; his son, Scott Cook and grandchildren, Matt and McKenzie; his three brothers Larry (Kay) Cook of Milford, IA; Jerry Cook of Adel, IA and Ronnie(Cheryl) Cook of Marion, IA; one sister, Bonnie Lambertus of Sioux Falls, SD and many nieces and nephews. Also left behind are his in-laws: Del Stassel of Sioux Falls, SD, Shelley Stassel of Sioux Falls, SD, Brian and Susan Stahl of Sioux Falls, SD, Robert Stassel of Lawrence, Kansas. DeAnn Bauer of Sioux Falls, SD and Jeff Stassel of Sioux Falls, SD.
