E.T. Cook, Old Resident of This
Community, Passes Away at His
Home After Lingering Illness

E.T. Cook, one of the few remaining Civil War veterans, died at his home in Dell Rapids early Monday morning. For some time Mr. Cook has been suffering with an infection in one hand and arm, and this gradually grew worse until finally blood poisoning set in, causing his death.

Eldon Freeman Cook was born in Barre, Vermont, October 9, 1843. He moved with his parents to Dodge County, Minnesota. On April 30, 1862, when only a little over 18 years of age, he enlisted for service in the Union Army, joining company I of the 5th Minnesota volunteer infantry. He was discharged for diabetes March 31, 1863, but reenlisted March 24, 1864, in company B of the 10th Minnesota. He was honorably discharged August 19, 1865.

On March 14, 1866, he was united in marriage to Amine Francis in Mantorville, Minnesota. His widow survives him. There are nine children born to this marriage, seven of home are living, three sons and four daughters: A.J. Cook, William N. Cook, Elizabeth Cook, and Mrs. Iva Hart of Sioux Falls, and Claude C. Cook, Mrs. J.J. Munk and Mrs. Julia Montis of Dell Rapids. There are also 24 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

Mr. and Mrs. Cook moved to Dakota Territory in 1875, filing on a claim a few miles north of Dell Rapids. He became a guard in the state penitentiary at Sioux Falls after a few years, and later was street commissioner of Sioux Falls. For about 20 years he has made his home in Dell Rapids.

Mr. Cook was unable to be present at the Memorial Day exercises this year, the first time he has failed to participate in the services since he lives here.

The funeral services were held at the home Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. E.E. Vernon, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Members of the American Legion were present and fired the salute and sound taps at the grave.

Mr. Cook was 86 years and 8 months old at his death.

The pallbearers were Chris Olsen, L.K. Larson, Dick Richardson, W.W. Briley, Bruce Hart and A.B. Gillette.
