John I. Steen
April 24, 1936 - December 16, 2017
John Ingvald Steen, 81, of Sioux Falls, SD, passed away on Saturday, December 16, 2017, surrounded by his family, at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls.
John was born April 24, 1936, in Brookings, SD and graduated from Brookings High School in 1955. He entered military service with the United States Army in 1958 and was stationed in Greece until receiving an honorable discharge in 1962. Following his military service, John returned to Brookings to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from SDSU in 1966. That same year, he began a banking career that would span more than 30 years starting with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) within the United States Department of the Treasury, then as an Executive Vice President and Board Member for BANKFIRST in Sioux Falls.
John met his wife of nearly 45 years, Christl Schell, of Reilingen, Germany while examining a bank in Minneapolis, MN where she was a bank teller. On December 23, 1972, they were married at First Lutheran Church in Brookings. The couple raised their family in Minneapolis, Wausau, WI and Sioux Falls. John was an avid and skilled golfer who learned from his brothers and taught many people how to enjoy and play the game. He had a one of a kind and brilliant sense of humor. He also enjoyed pheasant hunting, fishing, watching sports, listening to Glenn Miller Orchestra music, and reading or watching World War II stories. John was a beloved and respectful son, brother, cousin, uncle, husband, father, grandfather, and friend.
John is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Christl; two sons, Eric (Angela) Steen and their children Avianna, Erika, and Ayden of Sioux Falls; and Jason Steen of Sioux Falls; his brother, Rueben (Mary Alice) Steen of Brookings; sister, Betty Wegner of Boise, ID; sister-in-law Donna Steen-Wallum of Brookings; and 27 nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Lena Steen; his infant son, Darin; five brothers and two sisters-in-law, Erwin, Leon, Stafford (Phyllis), Ivan (Angie), and Ray; three sisters and three brothers-in-law, Elaine (Dr. Donald) Asbjornson, Joan (Vern) Isham, June Steen, and Reginald Wegner; niece Karen McConnell; and mother and father-in-law, Ilse and Ernst Schell.
Memorial services will begin 1:00 pm Saturday, December 30, 2017 at First Congregational Church.
Memorials may be directed to First Congregational Church or to the American Red Cross.
