Sioux Falls- Joan Lucille Steen, age 71, passed away on Wednesday July 20, 2011 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Funeral service will be 10:00 AM on Saturday, July 23, 2011 at East Side Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls. Burial will be at Bethany Cemetery in Colton, SD. Visitation will begin at 12:00 PM on Friday at George Boom Funeral Home, Sioux Falls with the family present to greet friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM.

Joan Lucille Middlen was born on October 20, 1939 in Luverne, MN to Daniel and Berneice (Lottman) Middlen. As an infant her family moved to Sioux Falls, SD and it is here where she received her education graduating from Washington High School. On September 4, 1959 Joan was united in marriage with Andrew H. Steen in Sioux Falls. The couple enjoyed traveling, and spending time at their lake home at Lake Brant. Joan worked for a number of years at StarMark Cabinetry retiring in 2004. Andrew passed away on March 22, 2009.

Joan very much enjoyed working out and making new friends at the Avera Fitness Center, as well as learning how to use her computer. Above all she loved spending time with her family; especially her granddaughter Ashton, whom she cared for dearly.

Grateful for having shared her life is her son, Mike (Kelly) Steen of Sioux Falls; three granddaughters, Amy McGaa and her husband, Chris, Katie Steen, and Ashton Steen, all of Sioux Falls; two great-granddaughters, Emma Heisel and Aloma McGaa both of Sioux Falls; brother, Russell Middlen and his wife, Irene, of Colton, SD; two nieces, Julie Mohr and her husband, Warren of Crooks, SD, and Linda Hohenhaus and her husband, Andrew of Apple Valley, MN; and one nephew, Darrell Middlen of Sioux Falls.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; infant son, Daniel Steen; and brother, Jack Middlen.
