Henry Thompson was born in Ireland in 1844. He grew up on a farm and learned the trade of a weaver. In 1864 he immigrated to America and settled in Janesville, Wis., where he worked on farms. He then moved to Fillmore County, Minn. Here he married Marie Rommereim in 1872. She was born in Norway in 1847 and came to America with her fami¬ly. Henry learned to speak Norwegian. In 1874 the family arrived in the Dakota Territory and located on a claim in Pleasant Township, Section 24. Here he built a sod house and started to farm the land. Henry then bought a farm in Section 14 of Pleasant Township. Later he took up a homestead in Section 12. Here, again, he built a sod shanty in which he and his family made their home for four years. Henry and Marie Thompson had nine children. Betsy (1873-1958) married S. A. Rommereim; their daughter was Agatha. The second child of Henry and Marie was Anne 11874-1951). She married John Eide from Norway. The other children were John (1876-1957), Mollie (1879-1959, Mrs. Lud¬wig Romereim), Thomas (1881-96-died when a horse kick¬ed him), Mary (1883-1959, Mrs. John Arne), Robert (1885-1952), Emma (1886-1956, Mrs. Ludwig Rasmussen), and Bertha (1889-1976). Henry and Mary Thompson and their family lived on the farm until 1915, when they moved to a house in north Beresford. Their youngest, Bertha, lived with her parents until their deaths. Son Robert, remained on the homestead. Henry died in 1923, when he had gone out to the pasture at the east edge of town to fetch his cow home. His body was discovered near the end of the pavement on the county line. He died of heat exhaustion. Mrs. Thompson died in 1934. (Source: The History of Lincoln County, SD 1985, page 717)
