J.J. Mortvedt Dies at the Age of Eighty – One
J.J. Mortvedt, well known citizen of Dell Rapids, a resident of the community for more than a half century passed away at this home here Monday morning, from the effects of heart ailment, at the age of 81 years, 6 months, and 23 days.
Jacob J. Mortvedt was born May 5th, 1868, Benton County, Iowa. As a child he came with his parents to Westerville, Clay County (then Dakota Territory) S.D., where his father took a homestead. Here his grew to manhood. He spent several years near Blomington, in Charles Mix County before coming to Minnehaha County in 1896.
Mr. Mortvedt was married to Olina Anderson of Dell Rapids, June 20, 1896. They made their home with the Andersons for about a year, then they moved to their home, the farm now occupied by a son, Justin, in 1897. Mrs. Mortvedt died Feb. 17, 1910 and an infant, 10 months of age preceded her in death.
Twenty-one years ago he moved to Dell Rapids and for the past 20 years he lived at his present residence.
He is survived by four children, Agnes Mortvedt, Oak Forest, Ill., Justin and Ernest of Dell Rapids and Mabel Mortvedt, Jefferson City, Mo. Two sisters also survive, Lena Mortvedt, Volin, S.D., and Mrs. Joseph Johnson, Irene, S.D. Seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Funeral services will beheld Friday afternoon (tomorrow) at 1:30 o'clock from the old farm home now occupied by Justin Mortvedt and from the Lutheran Church of which he has been a member for many years at 2 o'clock. Burial will be made in the family lot in Stordahl cemetery. The rev. Ole M. Odland officiating. Hermanson funeral service in charge.
