Myrtle Knutson
(August 8, 1915 - March 12, 2012)
Myrtle Knutson, age 96, died March 12, 2012 at Sanford Care Clinic in Chamberlain, South Dakota. Funeral services will be at 10:30 am Saturday, March 17, 2012 at St. John American Lutheran Church, Sioux Falls. Burial will be in the Minnehaha Cemetery, rural Colton. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 PM Friday at the St John American Lutheran Church.
Myrtle Mildred (Waswick) Knutson was born August 8, 1915 to Alfred & Bella (Lemme) Waswick. Myrtle was raised in the Humboldt and Colton areas and attended country school.
On November 23, 1935, Myrtle married Arnold Knutson in Humboldt, SD. To this union, five children were born: Ardyce, Marvin, Glen, Jim and Jeff. They lived at Buffalo Trading Post where Arnold operated a repair shop. Arnold died December 7, 1966. Throughout Myrtle's life, she worked at Fantles, Elks and the Good Samaritan Center. After her retirement, Myrtle worked several summers at Outlaw Ranch in Custer, SD where she became famous to the campers for her "Myrtle Bread".
Myrtle enjoyed traveling, quilting, making rugs with her friends at the Senior Citizens Center in Sioux Falls, watching baseball, listening to Elvis and Ann Murray. She was very proud of her Norwegian heritage. During her life, Myrtle was a member of the St. Jacob's Lutheran Church in rural Colton. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, SD until the time of her death. August of 2008, Myrtle moved to Chamberlain and was a resident at the Sanford Care Center.
Myrtle is survived by a daughter, Ardyce (Keith) Osterberg of Chamberlain, SD; 3 sons, Marvin (Nola) of Sioux Falls, SD, Jim (Jan) of Rapid City, SD and Jeff (Diane) of Wamego, KS; one sister, Hazel Schjodt of Sioux Falls, SD; twelve grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and 3 great great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband and son, Glen; her parents; four brothers and one sister.
