Morris "Sam" Knutson, 79

Morris "Sam" Knutson, was born Aug. 19, 1921 in Inwood, Iowa, to Morris O. and Rosie Swenson Knutson. He attended kindergarten in Inwood and then his family moved to Colton and he attended Lawndale County School. He attended Colton High School. His family moved east of Dell Rapids and Sam graduated from Trent High School in 1940. He farmed with his father in the Dell Rapids area until he entered the U.S. Army on Jan. 11, 1945, and served in the South Pacific for 18 months, attaining the rank of sergeant. He was discharged n Nov. 26, 1946, and was married to Laura Nebben on June 8, 1947, at Colman Lutheran Church; Colman in 19514 and Sam worked as a bartender, owned and operated a produce business, managed a feed mill, worked as a carpenter and was an insurance and car salesman. Sam enjoyed dancing, fishing, bowling and golfing.

Sam was a member of the Colman Luther Church where he served as president, trustee, deacon and taught Sunday School. He served as magistrate of Moody County for several years and was deputy sheriff. He was a member of the Colman American Legion Post 278, where he served as commander and sergeant of arms and a member of Colman Development Corporation and Colman area Recreation Golf Club.

Sam died Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2000, at his home in Colman from pulmonary problems. He is preceded in death by his parent and one sister, Betty Anderson.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Laura; two daughters, Kathleen Keppen and her husband, Randy, Sioux Falls; and Cynthia Erickson, Brandon; five grandchildren: Eric, Angela, Paula, Sarah and Emily; and great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Erica, Morgen, Gustaf, Angelique, Dominique and Stephen; three brothers: Merle and his wife, Shirley, Arlington; Don, Dell Rapids; and Richard, and his wife, Arlis, Custer; two sisters, Harriet Kroger, and her husband, Walt, Custer, and Donna Broksieck and her husband, Don, Leavenworth, Kan.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000, at the Colman Lutheran Church with Pastor Tedd Rieke officiating. Interment was held at the Dell Rapids Cemetery.
