James Dec 12, 1925 - Aug 10, 2011
Alice 1923 - Mar 19, 2012
Married Dec 25, 1946
Children: Marilyn, James II, Kenneth, Marvin
Alice was born to John and Matilda (Hofer) Nachtigall of Freeman, S.D. on Nov. 23, 1923. She was baptized and became a member of the Silver Lake Mennonite Brethren Church. Alice graduated from the Freeman Academy, attended Freeman Jr. College, and taught in a one-room school west of Freeman. Seeking further education she attended South Dakota State College at Brookings, S.D. 1944-1946, where she met James Ulrikson. They were married on Christmas Day 1946 in the Canton Lutheran Church, S.D. Alice taught home economics at Rutland, S.D. 1946-1947. Their first child, Marilyn, was born in Rapid City; Jim Jr. in Sioux Falls, S.D.; and Kenneth and Marvin were born in Canton, S.D. Shortly after, the family moved to North Hollywood, Calif. where Jim and Alice had an electrical contracting business. Alice became secretary and bookkeeper when the business downsized to allow Jim to attend college and then seminary to become a Lutheran minister. Their first parish was in North Dakota, followed by New Mexico and then on to Fountain Hills. At Jim’s retirement they did interim ministry in Washington and California. Eventually they retired (full-time) in Fountain Hills. Jim and Alice were a team in all they accomplished in 64 years of marriage, business and ministry. Though they lived in 40-plus houses, Alice always made it a “home.” She was known for her ready hand to help in Sunday school, women’s Bible studies, and all the building and remodeling projects that her husband or children relied on her for. Always on top of things, Alice was a true renaissance woman. She was equally skilled with a sewing machine or a carpenter’s square, editing a sermon or making a meal. She even invented a few card games with her grandchildren. Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Jim; grandson, Carl, and brother, Alfred. She is survived by her children, Marilyn Fenn (David), Jim Jr. (Deborah), Kenneth (Dawn) and Marvin (Victoria); her grandchildren, Katherine Humphrey, Kristina Swanson, Jay, Lisa, Sarah, Kenneth Jr., Mackenzie and Toren Ulrikson; and four great grandchildren, Jackson, Margarite, Ava and Cole. She is also survived by her sister, Mary Graber, brother, Andrew and sister-in-law, Donna (Gene) Sundt. The family is grateful for the loving care given to Alice in the last months and years of her life as she suffered with dementia, especially those with Mountainside Assisted Living (thank you, Jodi and Dawn), Joy Community Church, (thank you Pastor Don) and all the other friends who supported her and the family through her long goodbye. Memorials may be made to Joy Church Sunday School fund, 13430 N. Saguaro Blvd, Fountain Hills, AZ 85268. Memorial services will be held at Messinger Mortuary, 12065 N Saguaro, Fountain Hills, Saturday, March 24, at 1 p.m. Alice will be laid to rest alongside Jim at Forest Hill in Canton, S.D.
