Bernie Wayne Heinemann, son of Ben and Estelle Heinemann, was born on February 10, 1942, in Garretson, SD. He grew up in Garretson until age 11 when the family moved to Sioux Falls, SD, and he graduated from Washington High School in 1960. Bernie enlisted with the United States Navy and returned to Sioux Falls after being honorably discharged.

Bernie was united in marriage with Marilyn Honey on July 19, 1969, in Sioux Falls, SD. Bernie began a career with John Morrell and Company and began to raise a family. He retired in 2008 after over 46 years of service.

Marilyn passed away on June 30, 2009.

Bernie was a member of St. Michael Parish and enjoyed tending to his yard, his tomato plants, and his 1987 Corvette. His favorite thing to do was attending his grandchildren’s sporting events. He became known as St Michael softball’s #1 fan.

Bernie and his grandson Ryan were incredibly close. They got together every week for lunch for the last 12 years and talked about softball, sports, their fantasy football and NASCAR teams and family. Bernie was especially proud to be a great grandpa to his granddaughter Lizzie’s child, Navy.

Grateful for having shared his life are his daughter Angie Soukup and her husband Jim, Sioux Falls, SD; sister Bonnie Baker and her husband Gary, Seattle, WA; grandchildren Ryan and his wife Tanna, Ashley, and Lizzie; one great-granddaughter, Navy; and many other relatives and friends.

Bernie was preceded in death by his parents and beloved wife Marilyn.
