Douglas Lee Hough
October 29, 1930 - March 31, 2022
Douglas Lee Hough, age 91 of Brandon, SD passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, March 31, 2022. A Memorial Service will be 2:00 PM Monday, April 11, 2022 at George Boom Funeral Home & On-Site Crematory, Sioux Falls.
Douglas was born October 29, 1930 in Sioux Falls, SD to parents Gaylord and Hazelle (Strom) Hough. He was one of the first babies born at Sioux Valley Hospital‘s current location. As their only child, he was the apple of his parents' eyes. Young fourteen-year-old Douglas was first chair violinist in the Augustana orchestra due to the fact that college-aged men were fighting in WWII. Douglas graduated from Washington High School in 1948 and attended Augustana College. He served his country in the Navy during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Hawaii at Pearl Harbor as a submarine warfare instructor.
Douglas was blessed with a full and valued life. He met his beloved, Grace Haupt, in June of 1958 at Wall Lake. The couple married six months later on December 27, 1958 in Aberdeen, SD. They were blessed with five children and 63 years together.
Douglas began his long career at John Morrell and Company in 1949 in the pork trim department. In 1954 after returning from the Navy, he joined management in Accounting and earned his way up to become the Sioux Falls Plant Manager and senior Vice President. He retired in 1988 to his rural home near Brandon, SD. There he partnered with Grace and son, Jason in running a successful sheep farm. He enjoyed raising sheep, stacking hay bales, riding his horse and fishing in the creek which runs through the pasture. Always a sportsman and outdoorsman, Douglas enjoyed bowling, golfing, sports and hunting. His passion was duck hunting with his sons and his retrievers. He was an avid runner, running six to twelve miles a day into his mid-80s. Many well intended passersby stopped to give the old guy a ride, only to learn he was out on the highway on purpose. Douglas loved spending time with his family at the farm. Countless happy memories were made with all his grandchildren as they bottle-fed lambs, hiked in the pastures and fished or canoed on the creek together.
Douglas is survived by his wife, Grace (Haupt) Hough of Brandon, SD; his children, Troy (Cathy) Hough of Sherman, SD; Lisa (Mark) Litschewski of Chaska, MN; Lauri (Terry) Gullickson of Sioux Falls, SD; Lynn (Brian) Buysse of Ghent, MN and Jason Hough of Brandon, SD; grandchildren, Jacob, Jordan, and Nolan Litschewski; Lily, Joel (Abby) and Eli Gullickson; Alaine (Andy) Steffl and Leo (fiancé, Tori Kuhlmann) Buysse; Lisa (Daniel) Willems, and Laura Lowe; five great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
He was proceeded in death by his parents, Gaylord and Hazelle (Strom) Hough.
