Judith Leuning, 87
Judith Johnson was born November 21, 1911, in Moody County near Trent, the daughter of John and Luella Johnson.
She grew up on the family farm near Trent and attended country school. She attended Trent High School and graduated in 1930. She then attended Madison Normal Teachers College in Madison.
She taught country school until she married John Leuning April 7, 1935 near Trent. They farmed near Dell Rapids until 1948 when they moved to their farm near Jasper, Minnesota. They retired in Dell Rapids in 1970.
John died in 1994. Judith remained in her home until the time of her death and for the last two years she had been cared for by her special friend, Lydia Waldner.
Judith died April 26, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one sister.
She was a member of the Reformed Church in Dell Rapids, the Reformed Church Women and the M&M extension club. Judith taught Sunday School and Bible School for many years.
Grateful for having shared her life are her two sons: LaWayne and his wife, Audrey of Jasper, Minnesota, and Lauren and his wife, Barbara of Phoenix, Arizona; her daughter, Mrs. Gerald (Gwendolyn) Jaycox of Pipestone; her nine grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; her two brothers: Curtis Johnson of Flandreau and Joel Johnson of Sioux Falls; and three sisters: Mrs. Willis (Evelyn) Sieps of Dell Rapids, Mrs. Viola Dahlmeier of Trent and Mrs. Eric (Bernice) Hermanson of Sioux Falls. Services were held April 30 at the Reformed Church in Dell Rapids with the Rev. Frank Boerema officiating.
Casket bearers were: Dennis Leuning, Dean and Doug Jaycox, Tom Hutchison, Ivan Van Essen and Joe Morin.
Interment was held at the Logan Reform Cemetery, rural Dell Rapids.
