Ronald Scott
July 8, 1943 - November 19, 2021
Heaven gained another fisherman on Nov. 19, 2021. Ronald Lee (“Ron”) Scott passed away peacefully with family by his side at age 78 after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born on July 8, 1943 to Lloyd (“Bud”) and Marie Scott in Sioux Falls, SD. He spent his childhood in Sioux Falls and Yankton, SD. He graduated from Yankton High School in 1961 in spite of putting the principal’s motorcycle on top of the school with his classmates.
He started his work career delivering Proctor and Gamble soap samples by getting lost all over the country, although he was well known for watering down his own soaps and shampoos. He moved on to laying track for the Milwaukee Railroad. He later worked for American Freight System in Sioux Falls as leader of the rate and billing department. After a while, he recognized his own leadership brilliance and became his own boss, buying a Taco John’s franchise in Davenport, Iowa. “Taco Ron” operated his franchise successfully for 13 years and eventually moved back to Yankton, and then Sioux Falls. Ron drove bus for the school district and the city of Sioux Falls. Although he kept his bus on schedule, he rarely passed up the opportunity to pick up a tool or something he felt he needed in the middle of the road.
Ron met and married his wife Betty Jane Harts in 1964. They had 3 children, Susan, David, and Daniel. Ron’s greatest love was spending time with his family and friends.
Ron had a penchant for making people laugh and loved a good joke. He was well known for his sense of humor.
Ron’s favorite hobbies were hunting, fishing, playing pool, camping, and bowling. He was a city champion for bowling. Whenever you hear thunder, it’s likely the sound of Ron knocking down pins in heaven. One of his favorite places to be was in a boat on the water. He especially enjoyed fishing with the catch of his life, Betty, and teaching his grandchildren how to fish. Ron often caught the biggest fish that no one has ever seen. Ron also loved snowbirding in Texas and Arizona with his wife and friends.
Ron is survived by his loving wife Betty of 57 years; his children Susan (Joe) Pyrz of Chanhassen, MN, David (Gretchen) Scott of Bettendorf, IA and Daniel (Robin) Scott of Davenport, IA; his sister, Mary Rowlett of UT, and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his 8 grandchildren: Megan (Phil) Giarratana, Caiti Pyrz (Jack Julson), Nolan Pyrz, Brendan Scott, Amanda Scott, Casey Scott, Cooper Scott and Drew Scott. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Richard (“Dick”) and Mike.
Ron’s family would like to thank Ava’s House Hospice in Sioux Falls for their wonderful and compassionate care during his last week of life. Memorials may be made to the family or to the GIST Cancer Awareness Foundation. Ron’s memorial service will be Tuesday, November 23, 2021 at 1:30 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home in Sioux Falls, SD. The family invites you to join them for a dessert reception and fellowship following the memorial service.
