Nathan Buchholz
April 8, 1925 – January 23, 2022
Nathan Buchholz, age 96, passed away on Sunday, January 23, 2022 at Trail Ridge Senior Living Community in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 pm Saturday, January 29, 2022 at Miller Funeral Home – Westside Chapel (6200 W 41st St., Sioux Falls, SD). Masks are required by the request of the family.
Nathan was born on April 8, 1925 to Emmanuel and Ida Buchholz. He attended Avon Community High School and worked on the family farm during his teenage years. In 1951, Nathan married the love of his life, H. Ramona Erickson, in Salem, SD. They lived on a farm outside of Avon and settled down to start their family. After a couple years, they decided farm life wasn’t quite right for them and moved to Mitchell, SD where he worked as a mechanic’s helper for the South Dakota State Highway Department. Shortly after, Nathan was offered and accepted a transfer to the Sioux Falls’ location which led him to the position of Shop Foreman. He continued in this position until his retirement in 1988.
Nathan loved to move, repairing and fixing their homes along the way. Throughout the many towns and new homes, the family grew, and in total, Nathan and Ramona had three children: Jeffery, Wendy and Bradley.
Nathan was always fixing and tinkering. He had an innate fascination with repair and could lend that to anything from motors to home improvement projects to broken children’s toys. He also loved camping and visiting the family cabin at Brant Lake. Nathan’s children and grandchildren have many fond memories fostered around those waters. Though Nathan couldn’t swim, he insisted on teaching the grandchildren to water ski, holding them up as they tested their abilities. Nathan and Ramona traveled often visiting most of the United States, even Alaska and Hawaii, along with neighboring countries, Canada and Mexico. They often wintered in Texas or Arizona.
Nathan loved his family most of all, especially Ramona. He extended chivalry and grace to her, even in his later days, insisting on pulling out her chair to help seat her in the dining room of Trail Ridge or holding open a door so she could enter a room. Nathan always took care of her first before looking after himself. In his last days, his face would still light up when she walked into the room, full of love for his partner of 70 years. He will be missed immeasurably.
Grateful to have shared Nathan’s life with him are his wife, Ramona; his children, Jeffery (Deb) Buchholz, and their children, Carrie (Josh) Livingston and Katie (Brian) Castle; Wendy (Jim) Hammrich and their children, Heather (Mike) McLean, Emily (Bob) Van Weelden, and Lindsay (Matt) Edwards; and Bradley (Dawn) Buchholz and their children, Nate (Katie) Buchholz and Courtney Buchholz; his eleven great-grandchildren with one more on the way; and his one great-great-grandchild.
Nathan is preceded in death by his parents, Emmanuel and Ida; and his twelve brothers and sisters.
