Obed J. Hofer, 87, of Sioux Falls, SD died Friday, September 29, 2017 at Oakview Terrace in Freeman, SD. His funeral service will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, October 4 at George Boom Funeral Home & Crematory, Sioux Falls, with burial at Hills of Rest Cemetery. Visitation begins at 5:00 PM Tuesday, October 3 at the funeral home, where the family will greet friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
Obed John Hofer, son of John and Adina (Watter) Hofer, was born April 1, 1930 in Menno, SD. He grew up in Freeman, SD. Obed graduated from Freeman High School in 1947. He then attended General Beadle Teacher’s College. Obed entered the U.S. Army on January 15, 1952 and served during the Korean War.
Obed was united in marriage with Martha Easley on December 31, 1953 in Clarksville, IN. The couple lived at Fort Knox, KY until Obed’s honorable discharge on January 16, 1954. Obed continued to serve his country in the Army Reserve until February 10, 1960. The couple moved to Ramona, SD where Obed taught school in addition to serving as assistant principal and coaching. The family then moved to Sioux Falls, SD where Obed began his teaching career at Whittier Junior High School. Obed retired as head of the science department at Whittier in 1990 after 32 years of service.
Obed was a member of First United Methodist Church, the National Education Association, the South Dakota Education Association and the Sioux Falls Education Association. He enjoyed hunting and bowling.
Grateful for having shared his life are two sons, Rob Hofer, Sioux Falls, SD, Mike Hofer and his wife, Sheri, Tea, SD; seven grandchildren, Justin Hofer, Jordan Hofer, Haley Hofer, Ellie Mews and her husband, Jake, Alex Hofer, Lexi Coy, Landry Coy; a daughter-in-law, Lori Hofer, Sioux Falls, SD; a sister, Lorraine Dibbert, Sioux Falls, SD; and many other relatives and friends.
Obed was preceded in death by his wife, Martha, on June 22, 2015; a daughter, Laura Lee Hofer; a son, Richard Hofer; and his parents, John and Adina.
