James D. Black, age 70 of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, passed away Wednesday, August 31, 2022 at Touchmark at All Saints.

James Douglas Black was born January 18, 1952 to George and Doris (Kenyon) Black in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He attended public school and graduated from Washington High in 1970. Following graduation, James enlisted with the Air National Guard from 1970 – 1976.

On January 18, 1973, James was united in marriage to Mary Eide at Zion Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. To this union, the couple became loving parents to their 2 children, Doug and Brandi. James and Mary later divorced. On July 11, 1992, James was united in marriage to Sharon Schempp-Newcomb at Tuthill Park in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. To this union, James was honored to help raise Sharon’s 2 daughters, Lisa and Jessica and son, Sean. Later, James and Sharon became loving parents to their 6th child, Connor.

James worked as a press operator at CCL Label in Sioux Falls, South Dakota for nearly 44 years. He worked until medical issues forced him to retirement. James retired in 2021.

James was an avid Kansas City Chief fan, and also enjoyed watching the Sioux Falls Storm and Canaries play. He loved bowling and camping; however, his greatest passion was watching his kids’ and grandkids’ sporting events.

Grateful for having shared his life are his children, Doug (Kari) Black, Brandi (Dennis) Van Lenning, Connor (Kali) Black, Lisa (Louis) Winter, Jessica (Steve) Fessler and Sean (Sarah) Newcomb; 15 grandchildren, Dylan, Garrett, Kaitlyn, Caleb, Hannah, Emily, Brooke, Ashley, Madelyn, Ben Tiegen, Ryleigh, Hayden, Broden and Hudson; great-granddaughter, Georgia; and siblings, Carole (Gary) Fitzgerald, Ron Black, Tom Black and Chelle (Sue) Black.

James is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Sharon Black; sisters, Kathy Hoefert and Georgia Larson; brother, Jerry Black; and granddaughter, Taylor Newcomb.

Funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm, with family present to greet friends beginning at 11:00 am on Tuesday, September 6, 2022 at Miller Southside Chapel, 7400 S. Minnesota Ave., Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Interment will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery, Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
