Jacqueline "Jackie" Faith Hanson
October 23, 1932 - September 24, 202
Jackie Hanson, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, died September 24, 2021 at Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD surrounded by family and friends.
Jackie Hanson was born October 23, 1932 in Brush Colorado to Walter and Faith (Lackey) Hartwig. She attended Brush public schools and graduated from Brush High School in 1950. She went on her first big adventure attending college at St Olaf College in Northfield, MN.
At St Olaf, she met the love of her life, Jerry Hanson. They both graduated in May, 1954, and were wed in Brush CO on June 20. Jerry’s first career was in the Air Force which meant they moved many times in their first 20 years of marriage: Enid, OK, Bainbridge, GA, San Marcus TX, Lubbock TX, Dayton OH, Champaign-Urbana IL, the Air Force Academy in CO, Brush CO, and Fairborn OH. In the summer of 1975, they moved to Sioux Falls, SD where Jerry became the Director of Music at First Lutheran and faculty at Augustana College. In every setting Jackie created a loving home and sang in the church choirs Jerry directed.
Jackie was the heart of her family as her family and friends will all attest. She provided wonderful hospitality to family, friends, and church. They had over 100 people at their home annually for First Lutheran choir gatherings. Her big heart and warm smile welcomed many. She also loved art, doing oil painting in her 30s and 40s. Later she became the family’s photographer and photo album creator. She loved candles, making flower and dried arrangements, decorating for special occasions and many crafts. Jackie usually lit candles when she gathered people around her table(s) for food, conversation, and laughter. She was a gifter, and many were the recipients of her gifts. She was a creator of beauty in service of hospitality and a memory keeper.
In the last decade of her life, she lived with the limits of a stroke, and did so with a great deal of perseverance and grace. Jerry lovingly made their life wheelchair accessible. They continued to travel annually to their Colorado home and to attend church and concerts in Sioux Falls.
Grateful for having shared her life is her husband Jerry Hanson, daughter Jodi Hanson (Andy Vos), Sioux Falls, SD, sons Jeff (Laurie) Hanson, Brush, CO, Joel (Robyn) Hanson, Gypsum, CO; 9 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren; sister Jan (Rodney) Ruppel, Beaumont, TX, sister-in-law Shoonie Hartwig, Roseville, MN, and 6 nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother Gerald Hartwig, her sister-in-law Karen Larson, nephew Karl Hartwig, and niece Cathy Claire De Laura.
Memorials may be directed to First Lutheran Church Music Ministries, 327 S Dakota Ave., Sioux Falls, SD 57104.
Funeral Services will be held 11:00 AM Friday, October 1, 2021, at First Lutheran Church, 327 S. Dakota Avenue. Visitation is on Thursday evening September 30 at Miller Funeral Home, 507 S. Main Avenue. Family will be present to greet friends from 5:00-7:00. The family requests that masks be worn at both the visitation and funeral.
