Jim was born on November 7, 1935 to Ross and Iona (Whitaker) Barber in Parker SD. Shortly after, the family moved to Sioux Falls where Jim grew up with his nine brothers and sisters. Jim enlisted into the Air Force and was initially stationed at Mountain Home AFB, ID. He was then stationed in Korea and Japan. While stationed at Tachikawa AB Japan, Jim met his wife, Yoshiko (Arai) Barber. They were married in Japan on August 13, 1957. Their first born, James Jr., was born in 1960 in Tachikawa. They moved to the United States to Chandler, MN. While stationed at Chandler AFB their second child, Brenda, was born in 1964. Jim was transferred to Hamilton AFB, California. Jim kept active enjoying detailing his vehicles and dabbling in wood work. It would not be out of the ordinary to see him working around the house and doing yard work.
