Mrs. A.R. Stephens

Sarah Jane Stephens was born in Green County, Wis., May 8, 1847, and grew to womanhood near Monroe, the county seat of the same county. She was married to Alfred R. Stephens Jan 16, 1868, living in Wisconsin until 1878, when with her husband and one daughter, Alice; they drove overland to South Dakota, reaching Moody County, March 4, 1879.

They settled on a homestead two miles south of Lone Tree where they resided until 1895 when they moved to another farm nearby, residing continuously in this county with the exception of from December 1907 to November 1909 when they lived in Missouri.

Returning from Missouri in November 1909 Mrs. Stephens with her husband purchased the home in the south part of town where they have since resided.

Mrs. Stephens was an ardent member of the Woman’s Relief Corps and always interested in the welfare of her family and friends, a consistent worker in the M.E. Ladies Aid, and a member of the M.E. Church.

She departed from this life March 23, 1922, aged 74 years, 10 months, 15 days, leaving to mourn her passing her husband, a daughter, Mrs. Harry Phillips, of Colman, a son, Ray and grandson, Glen Sands, of this city, a sister, Mrs. W.W. Bailey, of Flandreau, and elder daughter, Mrs. Alice Sands, mother of Glen, departing from this life March 22, 1903.

May the earliest bud of spring unfold their beauty over her resting place and on the bright morn of Resurrection may her soul expand I newness of life and dwell forever in realms beyond the skies.
