Hilkea was born to Martin F. and Martha (Groenewold) Valentien. Hilkea married Henry Andreessen on May 13, 1886 in Lennox, SD. 11 children were born to this union; Henry, Martha, Dora, Martin, Cornelius, Etta, Anna, Matthew, Clara, Hilko and Effie. Hilkea attained the age of 79 years, 5 months and 26 days.
