Following the war he resided in Sioux Falls and was elected county treasurer in November, 1922, and was re-elected in 1924. He was later employed in a state department at Pierre and after serving five years as deputy sheriff in the county was elected to the position of sheriff in 1944, and was re-elected in 1946.

Surviving are his widow, the former Myrtle Anderson whom he married in Sioux Falls January 17, 1945; a small son, James G. McFarland; two brothers, Albert McFarland, Sioux Falls and Douglas McFarland, Portland, Ore.; and two sisters, Mrs. R.G. Rhodes and Blanche McFarland, both of Sioux Falls.
