Karen "Mollie" 1880 - 1955
John Mons Yttreness, son of Brita and Johannes Yttreness, was born in 1874 in Norway Township. He received his early education from Pleasant Valley School in Pleasant Township. He attended a school at Redwing, Minn., but abandoned that because of ill health. He and his brother Bert broke many acres of sod with a walking plow during their youth. He married Karen (Mollie) Johnson from the Spink-Akron area, daughter of Hans and Christiana Johnson. She had been a school teacher after attending normal school at the University of South Dakota. They purchased the farm of Mathias Schmid in 1901. Throughout his life John was a layman with the S.D. Inner Mission Society and traveled extensively throughout the state, and in Iowa and Nebraska. Six children were born: Hazel, Joseph, Harold, Justus, John, and Helen. Hazel, a Lincoln County school teacher for many years married Arthur Hybertson. They farmed in the Centerville and Beresford areas and retired to live in Sioux Falls. Their children were Audrey and Paul Hybertson. Paul married Lillie Ann Larson, who lived north of Beresford. Ar¬thur is deceased. Joseph Yttreness farmed in the Worthing area many years before moving to Inwood, Iowa. He never married. Harold married Thrina Johnson and they lived near Davis. Their children are' Carol (Mrs. Norman Gustafson), Lois (Mrs. Jim Dravland), and Helen (Mrs. Gene Schoffelman). Justus married Dorothy Meelberg and lived in the Davis and Flandreau area. Their children are Dianne (Mrs. Mike Wood), John, and Robert. The youngest son, John still lives on the home place where he was born and raised. He married Clarice Stoen. They had four daughters. Helen, the youngest in the family, was an Augustana College graduate. She taught in Chancellor and Dell Rapids. She married Russel F. Johnson and they reside in West St. Paul where she had taught for many years. Their children are Joan (Mrs. Dave Auten), Bill, and Mary (Mrs. Todd Edholm). Joseph, Justus, and Harold are deceased. John and Mollie were influential citizens of the school, community and church, serving on the school boards and especially the Sunday school and Bible classes of Romsdal Church. John M. died in 1953 and Mollie in 1955. They are buried in Romsdal Cemetery as is their oldest son, Joseph. (Source: The History of Lincoln County, SD 1985, page 774)
