Carl Solem was born July 21, 1888, in Highland Township. Carl attended Highland School as often as possible; however, boys were kept home to help with farm work so it was hard for them to get a great education. As a young boy he soon became interested in girls so with his horse and buggy he would to courting. He met Thea Haugen, who lived three miles east on her father's homestead with her sister and brother. After some time they decided it was time for them to marry. On Feb. 27, 1913, at Thea's home they were married. Thea Haugen was born on July 23, 1885, to Andrew and Ida Haugen. She attended school in J ensvold School and started at Augustana, but due to the death of her father, she had to return home. Thea had one sister and four brothers. When Carl and Thea returned from their honeymoon to Minneapolis, they settled on Thea's farm, just west of her home place. Carl and Thea were parents of four children: Inez (Mrs. Clarence Ekle), Arthur, Cloyd, and Norman, who passed away in 1945. Carl and Thea were members of Romsdal Church, and are buried in the church cemetery. Thea passed away in 1958 and Carl in 1967. (Source: The History of Lincoln County, SD 1985, page 686)
