Arthur Benjamin Solem and his wife Laverna Jones Solem are both natives of Lincoln County. Arthur is the son of Carl and Thea Haugen Solem. He was born on the family farm in Highland Township on Sept. 7, 1915. He attended the Jensvold School and after graduation began farming. For a time he worked for farmers in the neighborhood but then he began to farm with his father. Arthur served four and one-half years in the Army during World War II. After his discharge in August 1945 he returned to farming. On April 3, 1952, in Sioux Falls, Arthur married Laver¬na Jones, daughter of Edward and Edith Burns Jones of Can¬ton. She was born October 26, 1915, in Canton, graduated from Canton High School and Huron College. After teaching in Alabama for three years, she returned to Canton to take the job of Chief Clerk of the Lincoln County Draft Board. She held this position until the office was closed as the end of World War II. Then Laverna assumed the duties of Depu¬ty Register of Deeds and worked in that office until her marriage. Arthur and Laverna are the parents of two children: Ruth Janet, born June 9,1954, who is married to Roger Stevens and has two children; and Norman Arthur, born Jan. 23, 1957, who lives on the home farm and farms with his father. Both Ruth and Norman were born in Canton, attended grade school in Highland School and graduated from Canton High School. Arthur and Laverna Solem live on the Solm homestead which is located in the northwest quarter of Section 31 of Highland Township. (Source: The History of Lincoln County, SD 1985 page 686)
