Elmer Olbertson was born April 25, 1904 on a farm north of Centerville, S.D., to Emil and Ella Yttreness Olbertson. Later they moved to the home of his grandparents, Johan¬nes and Britta Yttreness northeast of Beresford. Elmer attended Pleasant Valley School. He enjoyed hunt¬ing rabbits and pheasants which were abundant during his younger years. Farming was the core of his being. He delighted in watching the corn grow and in the fall he often gave visitors an ear to take home. He attended winter courses at Lutheran Normal in Canton and at South Dakota State College in Brookings. He served on the Pleasant Valley School board, was a Pleasant Township board member and was active in the Romsdal Church. Elmer and Mildred Hove were married in 1938. She was a school teacher from Flandreau. A daughter, Janet, graduated from Augustana College and was a teacher. She and her husband Dr. Steffen Helgaas are the parents of Bjorn, Bernt, and Anne. They live in Luverne, Minn. A son, John, graduated from South Dakota State University and started farming with his father. John married Sharon Hull and they are the parents of Kristin and Jed. Sharon teaches in the Beresford School system and the family lives on the home farm. In 1972 Elmer and Mildred built a home in Beresford and moved to town. Elmer still worked regularly at the farm. He died in 1978. (Source: The History of Lincoln County, SD 1985, page 594)
