Emil was born on May 24,1871 at Verran, Norway, later with his father moved to the Bue farm in Throndheim, Norway. At the age of 21 Emil came to America and found work on farms in the Centerville area. On May 6, 1903, he was united in marriage to Ella Yttreness at the Romsdal Church. They moved to the Y.B. Yttreness farm in Lincoln County which they had purchased. Here three daughters were born; Bernice (Mrs. Oscar Thissell), Esther (Mrs. Oscar Pearson), and Irene (Mrs. Donald Birnie). Ella's parents lived with them. Many family gatherings were held in the Olbert¬son home celebrating birthdays of Grandma Yttreness, pic¬nic at the Centerville beach, Fourth of July celebrations when ice was brought out from Beresford and ice cream was made and when relatives came to visit. Here too they lived through many hardships, grasshoppers, floods, the snow in the winter and dust storms in the summer. Emil passed away April 25, 1946, at his home in Beresford. Ella Yttreness was born Oct. 25, 1876, in Norway Township on the J. B. Yttreness homestead. She often told of the hardships during the early years. The closest town was Vermillion and her father walked there and home carry¬ing the flour he had bought. Ella attended Pleasant Valley School, Augustana College at Canton, and the University at Vermillion. She taught school before her marriage to Emil Olbertson. Ella passed away March 3, 1961. She was survived by one son, Elmer, and three daughters, Bernice, Esther & Irene, and one grandchild. She is buried in the Romsdal Cemetery beside her husband.
