South Dakota

1858 - 1946

Erick Kittelson was born June 23, 1854, in Gol Hall¬ingdal, Norway. He was married to Sigri Bren of Hallingdal in 1879, and they immigrated to America the following year. They arrived in Canton and homesteaded just west of where Lake Lakota is now situated. They bought a farm nine miles northeast of Beresford in Lincoln Township, where they lived for many years and raised their family of ten children. Their children were Ida (Mrs. Edw Sather), Carrie (Mrs. Ole TuntJand), Theodore, Oluf, Martha (Mrs. Steve Jackson), Emma (Mrs. Peter Eneboe), Selma (Mrs. Spencer Nash), Helmey, Tilman, and Selmer. Two children died in infancy. In 1892 they became members of Romsdal Lutheran Church. Sigri was a charter member of the Romsdal Ladies Aid. Both Erick and Sigri are buried in the Romsdal Church Cemetery. Mr. Kittelson had been in poor health for a number of years and had been spending his winters in California. In 1922 he attended to his business matters and left by train for California. The day after his arrival there, he became suddenly ill and he passed away within a few hours at the age of 68 years. After his death, Mrs. Kittelson continued to live on the farm which they purchased, a mile east of the old family farm, first with son Selmer and his family and later with son Tilman and family. Buell Kittelson now owns and lives on this farm. Mrs. Kittelson died in 1945. (Source: The History of Lincoln County, SD 1985, page 507)
