Walter "Walt" George, 99, of Chester passed away on Saturday, December 12, 2020 at Good Samaritan Society Village in Sioux Falls, SD. Private Family Mass will begin at 10:30 AM Thursday, December 17, 2020 at Huntimer-St. Joseph The Workman Catholic Church, rural Colton. The service will be live streamed at the Minnehaha Funeral Home & Cremation Services Facebook Page. Visitation will be held Wednesday, from 5-7:00PM at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Dell Rapids. Masks are required.
Walter William George was born November 26, 1921 on the family farm North of Chester SD to William and Clara (Mergen) George. Walter attended Chester school until he was needed on the farm. He entered the US Army in August 1942 and received his honorable discharge in October 1945. Walter married Lucille Mae Rotering on June 16, 1953 in Arcadia WI and moved to the family farm south east of Chester where they raised their five children. Walt and Lucille retired from farming in 1987, moved to town and he worked for a local farmer for 15 years before finally retiring to enjoy life with his family in 2002. Walter passed away on Saturday, December 12, 2020 at the age of 99 while residing at Good Samaritan Society Village in Sioux Falls, SD.
Walter was a life member of the Huntimer-St. Joseph The Workman Catholic Church, 75 year member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, 75 year member of Chester American Legion and served 5 years on the Lake County Weed Board. In addition to spending time with his family, Walter enjoyed playing cards, games, solve hand-held puzzles as well as attending family get togethers so he could share his wealth of family information with as many as possible. He was an accomplished stealth squirt gun shooter and many family members at various family reunions or get togethers will remember his sneak attacks along with his infamous silly smirk after being targeted.
Walter is survived by five children: James & Lori George of Chester SD, Susan & Lyle Swan of Centerville OH, Barb & Kevin Uthe of Sioux Falls SD, Kay Mackey of Sioux Falls SD and William & Peggy George of Dell Rapids SD, seven grandchildren: Teresa & Brad Reitmair, Amy & Chris Bates, Mike Swan, Chris & Tori George, Jon & Jessie George, Kari & Clint Jasper and Jake & Jamie Uthe, 27 great grandchildren, 5 sisters: Arleen Schmidt, Frances Rejevich, Helen Schnieders, Lucille Woodruff, Geraldine Pisklak and 1 Sister-In-Law: Armella George. He was preceded in death by his parents: William & Clara George, loving wife Lucille, 2 brothers Melvin & Cyril George, 3 sisters: Roseanne Schnieders, Marion George and Bernetta Seifert.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, December 16, 2020 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Minnehaha Funeral Home in Dell Rapids, SD. A private Family Mass will begin at 10:30 AM on Thursday, December 17, 2020 at Huntimer-St. Joseph The Workman Catholic Church, rural Colton. Masks are required for both visitation and Mass. The Funeral Mass and Graveside service will be live streamed on the Minnehaha Funeral Home & Cremation Services Facebook Page.
In lieu of flowers, cards may be sent to the Walter George Family, 4116 S. Fairhall Ave, Sioux Falls, SD., 57106. Memorials received will be donated in Walter’s name to the Chester American Legion.
