Florence Gubbrud was born January 6, 1914 in Canton, SD to parents David and Julia Dexter. She died May 9, 2006 at Bethany Lutheran Home in Sioux Falls at the age of 92 years.

Florence graduated from Canton High School in 1932 and was Homecoming Queen her senior year. She attended Sioux Falls College and received her teaching certificate. She taught one year in Lincoln County, one year at Sisseton and three years in Spencer. She married Archie Gubbrud in 1939. The couple resided in the Alcester area. They lived in Pierre from 1961 to 1965 while Archie served as the Governor of South Dakota. After completing his term they returned to the Alcester area where Florence lived until October of 2000 when she became a resident at Bethany Lutheran Home. Florence was baptized and confirmed at Canton Lutheran Church and later became a member of Lands Lutheran Church where she was active in the Women's ELCW group and the church choir. She was also a member of the Pleasant Study Club for over 60 years and was active in the Order of the Eastern Star.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one brother. Survivors include her two children: John Gubbrud of Alcester and Maxine Tunell and husband Denny of Sioux Falls; 4 grandchildren: Grant Gubbrud and wife Mary of Dakota Dunes, Dwight Gubbrud and wife Amy of Belle Fourche, Stacia LeBlanc and husband A.J. of Columbia, SC and Jason Roberts and wife Rachelle of Sioux Falls, SD; 2 step-grandchildren: Dorianne Tulio and Jason Tunell; and 13 great grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
