Death Summons One Of Our Pioneer Women

Mrs. Charles B. Huntimer Dies Saturday; Had Lived in County for Half a Century

Mrs. Charle B. Huntimer died at her home in Dell Rapids Last Saturday afternoon, after a lingering illness, aged 76 years and 13 days.

Mrs. Huntimer, whose maiden name was Ellen Sweeney, was born at Holy Cross, Iowa, September 9, 1852. She was married to Chas. B. Huntimer of Potosi, Wis., April 27, 1864. For two years they farmed near Potosi and then in the spring of 1878 they moved to Dakota territory, filing on a homestead in Taopi township, at Huntimer, three miles north of Colton, being among the first settlers in that section. They lived there until fourteen years ago, when they moved to Dell Rapids.

There were eight children born to them, six of whom are now living. They are Frank E. and Martin L. of Huntimer, Mrs. John Schaefer and Mrs. J.R. Baumberger, who resides within a few miles of the old home place, Fred C. Huntimer of Pheonix, Ariz, and Mrs. R.E. Anthony of Dell Rapids. She also leaves twenty-nine grandchildren and three sisters, Mrs. Susie Cotter of Dell Rapids, Sister Benedict of Sioux City, Ia., one half brother, Louis Sweeny of Dubuque, Ia., and one half-sister, Mrs. Frank Rooney of Los Angeles, Calif.

The following from a distance attended the funeral: Mr. and Mrs. Jack O’Brien of Tracy, Minn., Mrs. Anna Castello and daughter Catherine, of Madison, Mrs. Ella Sheldon, and Joe V. Huntimer, all of Madison.

The funeral was held Tuesday morning at St. Mar’s Catholic Church. Burial was by the side of her husband in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Dell Rapids.

One of the noble pioneer women of he county has passed on to her reward, leaving a multitude of mourning relatives and friends.

Her husband died eight years ago.
