Hazel M. Sheridan was born on February 1, 1921 at St. Paul, MN, the daughter of John "Jack" and Minne (Theel) Sheridan. She moved to Rock Rapids, IA at a young age and then to Dell Rapids, SD. She graduated in 1939 from Dell Rapids High School. Hazel attended SDSU and graduated from SDSU with a degree in Education. She began teaching Home Economics at Lyons. Hazel married Phillip M. Tonseth on June 13, 1948 in Dell Rapids. The couple made their home in Dell Rapids. Hazel continued teaching and taught Home Economics in Lyons, Baltic, Tri-Valley and Dell Rapids. She retired in 1972. Phil died in 1986. Hazel remained in Dell Rapids until 1994 when she moved to Sioux Falls. She moved back to Dell Rapids in 2001 when she became a resident of Terrace Manor.

Hazel was a member of the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Hazel died on Tuesday, June 13, 2006 at Terrace Manor Nursing Home. She was 85 and preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her granddaughter, Lyn Helgeson.

Those left to cherish her memory are her two daughters, Margaret (Glen) Helgeson of Renner and Jane Tonseth-Kukuk and her special friend, Christy Weeg of Sioux Falls; her five grandchildren, Nathan, Kara, Emily, Joy, and Marit; and her nine great-grandchildren; and her sister-in-law, Helen Danielson.
