Ellen Hurney was born on August 25, 1947 at Flandreau, South Dakota, the daughter of Richard and Loretta Hurney. She grew up in the Elkton area and attended St. Mary's School in Elkton through the eighth grade. She graduated from Elkton High School in 1965. Ellen attended Presentation College in Aberdeen for one year and then transferred to Augustan College in Sioux Falls. She received her Bachelor's Degree in Education in 1969.

Ellen married Ken bunkers on November 29, 1969 in Sioux Falls. They made their home northwest of Dell Rapids. Ellen started teaching at St. Mary School in Dell Rapids in 1987. They moved into Dell Rapids in 1989. She received her Master's Degree in History in 1991. She became the Principal of the St. Mary Grade School in 1992. She received her Masters Degree in Administration in 1993.

Ellen died on Wednesday, July 14, 1999 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls after a long struggle with cancer. She was 51 and was preceded in death by her father.

Ellen was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and altar society in Dell Rapids, the Catholic Daughters, and the Catholic Order of Foresters. She received the Outstanding Mother of the Year Award from the Foresters in 1997.

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Ken of Dell Rapids; her mother, Loretta Sundermeyer of Flandreau; her son, Patrick of Dell Rapids; her four daughters, Shelly of Dell Rapids, Suzanne of Croton, N.Y., Stacy of Sioux Falls, and Melissa of Dell Rapids; her two brothers, Rich Hurney of Harrisburg and Bill Hurney of Watertown; her two sisters, Mary Langner and Trisha Sampson, both of Sioux Falls; and her 41 nieces and nephews.
