Titus J. Unger
Titus (T.J.) Under, 84, of Dell Rapids died Saturday, Nov. 17, 1990 at the Terrace Manor Nursing Home, Dell Rapids.
Mr. Unger was born on Oct. 17, 1906, in Parkston. He was the oldest of five children. He lost his father at an early age and was sole support, along with his mother, of this brothers and sisters until their maturity.
He married Louise Isaak on June 29, 1931, at Parkston. Shortly after their marriage they resided in Sioux Falls where Titus owned and operated a Super Service Gas Station for 13 years. In 1945 the Ungers moved to Dell Rapids. Titus originally owned the Gamble Hardware Store and then the Dell Rapids Dry Cleaning Shop until his retirement.
Titus was an active member of his community. In addition to being a Charter Member of the Lions Club and Knights of Columbus of 66 years, he was member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church, Dell Rapids Sportsmen's Club and Lake Madison Association.
Being an active sportsman all his life, Mr. Unger was the inventor of the Flow-Troll Minnow Bucket. Following his retirement, they engaged in extensive travel until his illness overcame him.
Mr. Unger is survived by his wife, Louis; one son, David Unger of St. Louis Park, Minn.; three daughters, Mrs. Tom (Nancy) Astle of Las Vegas, Nevada, Mrs. Gordon (Carol) Guibert of Fountain Valley, Calif., and Mrs. Roger (Roxie) Ellis of Sioux Falls; one brother, Florian Unger of Casa Grande, Arizona; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The funeral Mass was held on Tuesday, Nov. 20, 1990, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Dell Rapids at 2:00 pm with father Kenneth Koster as celebrant. Interment was at the St. Mary's Cemetery. Casketbearers were Bud Heinemann, Clarence Klein, John Nemmers, Harvey Pederson, Don Swain, and Bill Strub. There was a wake service on Monday evening at the funeral home. Kahler Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
