Robert “Bob” James Tunender, age 90, of Sioux Falls, SD, passed away on Monday, August 1, 2022 at his daughter’s home in Esko, MN. Visitation will begin at 5:00 PM on Sunday, August 7, 2022 at George Boom Funeral Home & On-Site Crematory in Sioux Falls with a liturgical wake service to follow the visitation at 7:00 PM. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 AM on Monday, August 8, 2022 at St. Lambert Catholic Church in Sioux Falls with burial to follow at Woodlawn Cemetery.
Robert James was born on April 27, 1932 in Montrose, SD. He was raised on a farm near Humboldt, South Dakota by his loving parents, John and Rosella (Zettler) Tunender. Following his graduation from Humboldt High School, Bob enlisted and honorably served in the United States Army, where he served on the front lines, in Korea. Bob then made his home in Sioux Falls, SD and began his 37-year career with John Morrell and Company. Upon his retirement from John Morrell, Bob worked in the custodial department of Avera McKennan Hospital where he worked for another 23-years before his official retirement.
Bob was united in marriage with Shirley Ann Hathaway on June 7, 1958 and from this union was blessed with their daughter, Tracy. The family made their home on the East Side of Sioux Falls and were Charter members of St. Lambert Catholic Church. Bob was also a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Bob moved to Esko, MN in 2018 to be near his daughter.
Bob enjoyed fishing, camping, hunting, traveling and his weekly coffee group. Going back to Bob’s farm upbringing, he kept a meticulous lawn and always had a large vegetable garden. Above all, Bob cherished spending time with his family; especially his grandchildren. Bob was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend who will be deeply missed.
Grateful for having shared his life are his daughter, Tracy (Brent) Tonner, Esko, MN; two grandchildren, Mary-Kathryn (Bennett) Johnson, Edina, MN and Matthew (Amanda) Tonner, Cloquet, MN; two great grandsons, Cooper and Carter Johnson; one great granddaughter, Adalynn Tonner; three brothers: John “Jack” (Mary Lou) Tunender, Sioux Falls, SD, LeRoy “Toby” (Carolyn) Tunender, Sioux Falls, SD and Richard “Dick” (Judy) Tunender, Stillwater, MN; sister-in-law, Margaret Tunender, Sioux Falls, SD; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Ann Tunender; his parents, John and Rosella Tunender; brother, Don Tunender; sister, Darlene Duffy and her husband, Louie.
