Marilyn (pronounced Marlyn) Doris (Walker) Skogstad was born outside of White, SD, on December 22, 1929. She graduated President and Salutatorian of her high school class of 11 in 1947. She was also the artist and editor of the yearbook when she graduated, and was in the senior high school play.
Marilyn and Harlan Skogstad met at Red Owl Grocery Store in the early 60’s in Brookings, SD. They were married on August 12, 1962 and moved to Sioux Falls, SD. They purchased a home in the Hilltop area one block from Cleveland Elementary School and started their family. They had 4 children in 4 years, Keith, Kurt, Kevin, Kathy (Dilger).
Marley, as she was called by family and friends, was a stay-at-home mom until 1974 when she went to work at Lincoln High School as a Child Nutrition Specialist and eventually the manager of the food service program. Most everyone referred to her as the friendly lunch lady, except her kids’ close friends, she was Mrs. Skogie! She retired from the school district in 1999 after 25 years of service. In her tenure she traveled to many school food service district conventions around the country.
Marley enjoyed spending time with extended family and friends with frequent trips to Watertown, Brookings, Minnesota and Wisconsin, Colorado, area campgrounds and the Black Hills. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, watching sports, and attending all of her children’s sporting events. Marley was also a strong softball player, playing the hotbox and third base! She was an avid supporter of Lincoln High School sports. She also wrote down in notebooks all the Twins scores dating back to the early 1980’s and boys high school tournaments. In 2002, Marley started walking in the parks and recreation program in Sioux Falls with a close neighbor friend, Vivian Wehling. She continued walking until 2019, at the age of 90.
Marley and Harlan were members of the First United Methodist Church in Sioux Falls since 1962. Church was an important part of her life. The Skogstad’s had a pew of their own and everyone always asked where they were if they missed a Sunday.
Marley had 9 grandchildren, Kayla (Darren), Mindy (Jordan), Kyle, Jacob, Kayleigh, Josie, Kali (fiancé Dylan), Emelia (special friend T.J.), and Mitchel, and 4 great grandchildren, Capri, Ryker, Ramsey and Cora, that she adored and celebrated.
Marley enjoyed 94 rich years of living and was married to Harlan for 39 years when he passed in 2001. She is blessed to be with our Lord and Savior and her family is blessed to call her Daughter, Sister, Niece, Aunt, Mom, Grandma, and Great Grandma.
Grateful for having shared her life are her sons, Keith (Karen) Skogstad of Brookings, SD, Kurt (Kristin) Skogstad of Sioux Falls, SD, Kevin Skogstad of Sioux Falls, SD; daughter, Kathy (Michael) Dilger of Broomfield, CO; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a host of many other relatives and friends.
Marley was preceded in death by her parents, Jacob and Dora (Reiter) Walker; husband, Harlan Skogstad who died in 2001; and eleven siblings.
